Lost Link

Design Festa Spring 2016

pic

Design Festa is the largest art festival in Asia which is held biannually at Tokyo Big Site in Odaiba, Japan. Artists from all over the world are invited to express themselves in any way they see fit  through their work, regardless of their age, nationality, or even their talent. The festivities include a bazaar, stage performances, and most notably, live paintings by artists on canvases that range in size from a couple meters to a couple stories tall which are painted for the duration of the weekend long event. With no limits or restrictions on what can be exhibited, there are plenty of interesting, beautiful, and sometimes disturbing things to be seen here. RTP’s own Lost Link and Seagz retuned once again to see what was in store this year.

ANIMEJAPAN 2016

header

AnimeJapan is the biggest animation event in Japan where companies will set up booths to showcase and announce upcoming shows. This year Lost Link and Seagz visited the event with the intent to tag team video coverage. Although it was nowhere near as busy as Comiket, over 135 thousand attendees were strolling around the halls of Tokyo Big Sight.

MGSV: The Phantom Pain Story Analysis

It’s the MGSV podcast and the gang discusses the storytelling or lack thereof within the game.

Death Game Production

nona

My favorite anime of last year was a show by the name of Death Parade. It’s about arbiters. People who judge the souls of humans after they die. Only they’re bartenders who make their guests play games which decide the fate of their souls. It’s an original story by Yuzuru Tachikawa and not a manga adaptation. Besides being fantastically animated by Madhouse, it has a really interesting and surprisingly moving story. I decided I wanted to cosplay the main character so I started planning on putting the costume together for February’s Katsucon. It’s a fairly simple outfit so it’d be perfect to still be able to move around and film in during the event.

Katsucon 2015 Success!

maleficent

I returned to Katsucon this year, surviving the long flight from Japan and encountering no snow storms! Seagz and b-rock were unable to attend but I got to meet and hang out with a lot of cool people. The convention was filled with videographers and it was awesome meeting them all in person for the first time after watching their videos and talking online. RealTDragon and Cosplay With Me were especially rad dudes.

Inside the Tokyo Game Show 2014!

hunter

RtP! had a wonderful time at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, due largely to our involvement as official press. We came equipped with multiple video cameras as well as a NEW MIC for interviews. Our passes allowed us to comfortably move through the crowded areas of the Makuhari event halls in order to check out what was going on and report on booth activities. There was a lot of big statues and booth creatures (dragons, monsters, Gundams and a massive Shenron) to catch the eyes of the many attendees. You could try out the new games with pretty booth girls to help you learn the controls. There wasn’t a lot of new big titles being shown or revealed at the show. We waited around the Sega booth for new Persona 5 footage that never came. How disheartening.

Rescue the Princess! – #0035! Tutorials in Video Games!

Today the gang is discussing another storytelling theme: tutorials in video games. Can tutorials be creatively integrated into video game storytelling or will they forever be a “gamey” feature that disrupts our immersive experiences?

Games discussed: Bioshock, Persona, Prince of Persia, XCOM, Kingdom Hearts, Zelda, MGS, Arkham City, Call of Duty, Siren

Summer Comiket Approaches!

bigsite

Are you prepared for the heat? I know I’m not. On August 15-17, b-rock, Seagz and Lost Link will be prowling the congested, sweaty halls of Tokyo Big Sight for comic gold. Meaning porn. It’s mostly porn. But art comes in many shapes and flavors. Last year Comiket was on the hottest day of the year and people were collapsing and being transported from the building on medic stretchers. Soo if you’re heading to Odaiba next weekend be sure to bring water or visit the vending machines frequently. Lost Link’s black Steadicam vest is definitely going to be great fun to wear for three days toiling around the outdoor parking lots, fighting photographers for sexy cosplay footage.

We’ll be sure to report in on our Comiket loot, pictures and video shenanigans. And porn. Probably lots.

RtP! to Cover the Tokyo Game Show 2014!

logo

We’ll be sending in the boys to tackle Japan’s largest video game show in September. Last year Lost Link almost met Kojima. What could happen this year? We’re hoping for some Persona 5 news as well as some Square Enix “we’ll always be in development” teases for KH3 or FFXV. And of course there’s always room for more Phantom Pain. We’ll also be checking out the indies and playable demos on the show floor. And Lost Link will most likely have the cosplay scene covered fully.

We’ll also be having a special guest fly down from Canada to join in our ultimate game coverage team. What mad things will he have to say? Probably nothing short of summer heat complaints.

TGS 2014 is September 20-21 2014 at the Makuhari Messe, in Chiba.

Rescue the Princess! – #0034! Pacing in Video Games!

After a long period of podcast inactivity, RtP! is back with a themed cast. Today we discuss how pacing effects storytelling in video games.

Games discussed: Panzer Dragoon, Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, Skyrim, Modern Warfare, Half Life, God of War, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill, Suikoden, Mass Effect, Persona, Final Fantasy, Gone Home, Myst, Zelda, The Witcher, Resident Evil, Journey

Niconico Chokaigi 2014: Sumo, Knights and Zombies!

adventure

Mostly I’ve been attending conventions to film the cosplay scene but Niconico was an event I wasn’t even sure had cosplay. I heard about it from a friend and looking it up online I could only discern that it was an event aimed at making people smile. So I decided to check it out and soon discovered that not only was there cosplay but also many, many other things to see. Most Japanese conventions are largely spectacle with big booths to check out upcoming attractions and buy merchandise. While they’re not nearly as social as America’s, it’s still fun to check out the interesting displays. And that’s where Niconico surpassed all of the Japanese events I’ve attended thus far.

AnimeJapan 2014 Report!

ash

I lugged the steadicam all the way to Odaiba this past weekend to check out AnimeJapan, a new convention aimed at being the world’s biggest anime event. This year the Tokyo International Anime Fair and the Anime Contents Expo merged into a single event where companies set up booths to showcase upcoming animations, demo new tech, put on stage shows and sell merchandise. While I mostly went to film the cosplay crowds I did spend some time walking around the 6 event halls. There was plenty to see with elaborate walk-in booths displaying all kinds of anime related goods. There was a life sized Gundam chillin in one hall with army chicks standing guard. There was a motion capture battle booth where you could wear an oculus headset and swing a sword against an opponent.

Musings of Mudora XIV: A Fluctuating Banner

varl

I haven’t had this much fun pointing and clicking since my childhood days playing Myst. But while I was often utterly alone on a mysterious island back then, in The Banner Saga I’m in command of a sprawling caravan journeying across an expansive land where the sun has stopped moving in the sky. As the leader of both men and Varl (giant badass horned viking people) I must make decisions that, more often than not, mean the difference between life and death for my people.

Third Katsucon Showcase Video!

First off I’d like to give a big thanks to Spazzerbot Cosplay for her wonderful work as the Journey cosplayer in this video. Not only was her outfit incredible but she gladly marched off into the snow with me to film “on location”. Like last year’s Ico shoot, filming outside allowed for some great backgrounds that evoked the game world. In this case…the snowy mountain ending of Journey.

Of course thanks to all the other cosplayers that came together for this. Entire Chrono Trigger cast amiright?!

This one took awhile to edit. Mostly because I thought I wouldn’t have enough footage to fill the whole song. But then I ended up finding enough…for two songs. Thus let the slow paced DRAMA and incredible dancing begin.

Guess I’ll start work on the review video now…

Katsnowcon Videos!

dead

Well, after struggling through snow storms, jet lag, colored contacts and rotten pizzas, we’re back from the other side of the world. We’ll save most of the stories for our upcoming Katsucon review video but just know that flying to cons from half way around the world definitely has its draw backs. Still, it wasn’t without some fun and here’s some videos to prove it. Steadicam love:

Rescue the Princess! to Retake Katsucon XX!

fasfefef

Rescue the Princess! loved Katsucon so much that they’ve decided to collectively blow all their money and fly down from Japan to return this February! So far b-rock and Lost Link are hard at work constructing outfits and Seagz, Xinity and Phrank are being lazy.

Lost Link is also eager to continue playing with his new toy and you can check out some of the talented people he may be filming with below! Rumor has it that our GOOD PAL Ackson may be out of the picture this year shoving MLZ to the forefront as RtP’s new ETERNAL videography rival.

So keep your fingers crossed for good weather and bring on the Gaylord!
