Inside the Tokyo Game Show 2014!

hunter

RtP! had a wonderful time at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, due largely to our involvement as official press. We came equipped with multiple video cameras as well as a NEW MIC for interviews. Our passes allowed us to comfortably move through the crowded areas of the Makuhari event halls in order to check out what was going on and report on booth activities. There was a lot of big statues and booth creatures (dragons, monsters, Gundams and a massive Shenron) to catch the eyes of the many attendees. You could try out the new games with pretty booth girls to help you learn the controls. There wasn’t a lot of new big titles being shown or revealed at the show. We waited around the Sega booth for new Persona 5 footage that never came. How disheartening.

Musings of Mudora XIV: A Fluctuating Banner

varl

I haven’t had this much fun pointing and clicking since my childhood days playing Myst. But while I was often utterly alone on a mysterious island back then, in The Banner Saga I’m in command of a sprawling caravan journeying across an expansive land where the sun has stopped moving in the sky. As the leader of both men and Varl (giant badass horned viking people) I must make decisions that, more often than not, mean the difference between life and death for my people.

Musings of Mudora XII: Memories of the Moon

old

How’s that for an alliterative title? I’ve recently begun a sort of “indie game binge” wherein I play a bunch of indie games that I’ve heard promising things about. They’re a nice break from the 15+ hour blockbusters that I’ve been playing and give me a wider spectrum of games-played for our end of the year podcast. The shorter playtime may also explain why RtP! has made more than one post in the same week! Wow! But moving on to the main topic, and boy what a topic it is, I’ll start off by saying it’s a shame this game escaped my radar in 2011 because Freebird’s To The Moon would have rivaled Ghost Trick as my pick for best game story of the year.

Musings of Mudora XI: Stanley’s Job

stan

With the recent release of the HD remake of The Stanley Parable on Steam, I decided to give the game a spin after hearing promising things about an intriguing demo. I skipped the demo hoping the game would be more rewarding by knowing next to nothing about it. I was right. (Still, having watched the demo afterward I must give them credit for creating a demo that very accurately portrays what the experience will be like while at the same time showing next to nothing of the actual game). This article will offer my brief analysis of the game without spoiling any of the actual in-game events.

The Real Excitements of E3

logo

Here at RTP, we could care less about the so called “console war”. Though we may tend to poke fun at the culture and community surrounding the video game marketing industry (as you’ll see with our next set of podcasts), we are much more concerned with quality gaming experiences. We do not simply look forward to the next generation of games with regards to graphics but rather with the new and creative ways developers can tell stories within the video game medium.

While E3 might be filled to the brim with big PR announcements, new technology reveals along with some innovative/gimmick-riddled gameplay showcases, there are a bunch of previews for future game titles. So here’s a look at some highlights from E3 as seen from the point of view of those whose mouths don’t start to water at the sight of a new Call of Duty trailer.

The Best Video Game Stories of 2011 by Lost Link

best stories

2011 was a good year for video games with a lot of big releases during the last quarter. I haven’t even been able to start a few that I wanted to play (thanks Skyrim!). Unlike one of my notorious accomplices b-rock, I try to dedicate my time to a single gaming experience before moving on to the next. I feel more immersed and focused on the game’s story and characters. That, or my memory won’t allow me to save multiple princesses at once. But as the year is up I must pause and reflect upon the games that have stood out among the crowd and captured my imagination.
