Musings of Mudora XIV: A Fluctuating Banner

varl

I haven’t had this much fun pointing and clicking since my childhood days playing Myst. But while I was often utterly alone on a mysterious island back then, in The Banner Saga I’m in command of a sprawling caravan journeying across an expansive land where the sun has stopped moving in the sky. As the leader of both men and Varl (giant badass horned viking people) I must make decisions that, more often than not, mean the difference between life and death for my people.

Musings of Mudora XII: Memories of the Moon

old

How’s that for an alliterative title? I’ve recently begun a sort of “indie game binge” wherein I play a bunch of indie games that I’ve heard promising things about. They’re a nice break from the 15+ hour blockbusters that I’ve been playing and give me a wider spectrum of games-played for our end of the year podcast. The shorter playtime may also explain why RtP! has made more than one post in the same week! Wow! But moving on to the main topic, and boy what a topic it is, I’ll start off by saying it’s a shame this game escaped my radar in 2011 because Freebird’s To The Moon would have rivaled Ghost Trick as my pick for best game story of the year.

Warning: This podcast compares the anime and manga as well as offers some crazy theories into the Titan lore. Thus spoilers abound.

Musings of Mudora – IV: Falling Out

cow

Know what’s cool about video games? They give players experiences. Sure you can go ride a bike, climb a mountain, eat ice cream, and do a back-flip off your garage onto a trampoline to the sound of Fort Minor’s “Remember the Name”. But how many us have traversed the wasteland of Washington D.C. after a nuclear fallout?

Gaming’s 5 Most Attractive (And Rejected) Stalkers

Lezard Valeth, the Edward Cullen of Videogames

It is a truth commonly known that the best of the best tales of romance contain wild obsession and attempted rape and murder, from Apollo and Daphne to Les Miserables to Twilight to the greatest tale of all, WALL-E; videogames are no exception. But in celebration of Singles Awareness Day, let us not read about those who were successful in their pursuits! Let us read about those who tried yet inexplicably failed, despite their personal beauty, charisma, and insanity!

Top 10 Best Lines in Video Game Narratives

kidding

Dialogue has been an integral part of human interaction since the beginning of all time. In stories, dialogue can reveal the nature of a character, progress the plot, and create understanding in the audience. If the script is good enough, a single character can dominate a role to the point where the script seems to disappear. The same is true in video game narratives. A large part of our love of certain video game characters comes from our appreciation of not only what they do (actions) but what they say (dialogue). Below is a collection of the most inspired, well-written, thought-provoking, character-driven lines spoken by a character in a video game.
