Rescue the Princess! – #0034! Pacing in Video Games!

After a long period of podcast inactivity, RtP! is back with a themed cast. Today we discuss how pacing effects storytelling in video games.

Games discussed: Panzer Dragoon, Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, Skyrim, Modern Warfare, Half Life, God of War, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill, Suikoden, Mass Effect, Persona, Final Fantasy, Gone Home, Myst, Zelda, The Witcher, Resident Evil, Journey

Musings of Mudora XIV: A Fluctuating Banner

varl

I haven’t had this much fun pointing and clicking since my childhood days playing Myst. But while I was often utterly alone on a mysterious island back then, in The Banner Saga I’m in command of a sprawling caravan journeying across an expansive land where the sun has stopped moving in the sky. As the leader of both men and Varl (giant badass horned viking people) I must make decisions that, more often than not, mean the difference between life and death for my people.

Third Katsucon Showcase Video!

First off I’d like to give a big thanks to Spazzerbot Cosplay for her wonderful work as the Journey cosplayer in this video. Not only was her outfit incredible but she gladly marched off into the snow with me to film “on location”. Like last year’s Ico shoot, filming outside allowed for some great backgrounds that evoked the game world. In this case…the snowy mountain ending of Journey.

Of course thanks to all the other cosplayers that came together for this. Entire Chrono Trigger cast amiright?!

This one took awhile to edit. Mostly because I thought I wouldn’t have enough footage to fill the whole song. But then I ended up finding enough…for two songs. Thus let the slow paced DRAMA and incredible dancing begin.

Guess I’ll start work on the review video now…

The Real Excitements of E3

Here at RTP, we could care less about the so called “console war”. Though we may tend to poke fun at the culture and community surrounding the video game marketing industry (as you’ll see with our next set of podcasts), we are much more concerned with quality gaming experiences. We do not simply look forward to the next generation of games with regards to graphics but rather with the new and creative ways developers can tell stories within the video game medium.

While E3 might be filled to the brim with big PR announcements, new technology reveals along with some innovative/gimmick-riddled gameplay showcases, there are a bunch of previews for future game titles. So here’s a look at some highlights from E3 as seen from the point of view of those whose mouths don’t start to water at the sight of a new Call of Duty trailer.

The Best Game Stories of 2012!

We reveal our picks for the best video game stories released in 2012. Spoiler free cast!

Musings of Mudora IX: The King and I

swan

So I’m pretty sure my top 3 games of 2012 are all going to be indie, downloadable games. I recently had the pleasure of playing one on the PSN called The Unfinished Swan. The game tells a fairy tale about a boy chasing a swan that has escaped from one of his late mother’s unfinished paintings. You start in a completely blank white space equipped only with a paint brush. As it happens, the world around you is there but you have to paint in order to reveal your surroundings. This concept alone was enough to convince me to give the game a try (14.99) and to my genuine pleasure the game had an interesting tale to present in combination with its unique gameplay.

Musings of Mudora VIII: The Simple Beauty of Journey

wanderer

Journey is the new downloadable game on the PSN developed by thatgamecompany. It’s $14.99, takes a few hours to beat, and is one of the best experiences I’ve had in a video game. You play as a traveler in a desert, making your way to a shining mountain in the distance. What got me interested in this game in the first place was the art style. The lighting, shadows and simplicity of the environments are just…wonderful. There isn’t much in regards to gameplay. You can walk and look around and with the aid of your glowing scarf, jump into the air. You can collect pieces of light that add to your scarf allowing you to jump and float for longer periods of time.
